LLMs suffer from "Context Amnesia"—forgetting code in the middle of long conversations. We built a persistent memory layer using RAG and vector embeddings to solve this.
Solving Context Amnesia: The Engineering Behind Persistent Memory
In 2023, the "Lost-in-the-Middle" paper (Liu et al.) confirmed what every AI engineer suspected: Large Language Models are bad at reading.
Specifically, when you fill a 100k token context window, the model's retrieval accuracy follows a U-curve. It remembers the beginning (System Prompt) and the end (User Question), but it hallucinates or ignores information buried in the middle.
For a coding assistant, this is fatal. The "middle" is where your utility functions, type definitions, and API contracts live.
The Problem: Context Creep
We observed a phenomenon we call Context Creep.
1. Developer pastes utils.ts (5k tokens).
2. Developer asks a question.
3. Developer updates utils.ts.
4. Developer pastes the entire new file again.
This loop is inefficient and expensive. It leads to "Context Amnesia," where the model forgets the constraints you set 10 messages ago.
The Solution: A Semantic Memory Layer
We didn't just want a larger context window. We wanted better context management. Autobahn implements a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architecture specifically tuned for code.
1. Vector Embeddings for Code We don't treat code as text. We parse it into an AST (Abstract Syntax Tree) and embed the logic. We index your functions, classes, and exports. We store these embeddings in a vector database.
2. Smart Context Injection When you ask, "Update the login flow," the Orchestrator queries the vector DB: "Find all code related to 'login', 'auth', and 'session'."
It retrieves only the relevant snippets—perhaps auth.ts, LoginForm.tsx, and user.schema.ts—and injects them into the prompt.
3. The Result: Infinite Effective Memory Because we only load relevant context, the "Effective Context Window" is theoretically infinite. You can have a codebase with 1 million lines of code, but for any specific task, the model only sees the 2,000 lines that matter.
Why It Matters
This architecture solves the two biggest problems in AI coding: 1. Accuracy: By reducing noise in the context window, the model focuses on the signal. 2. Cost: You stop paying to re-tokenize your entire codebase for every request.
Autobahn is not just a wrapper around an API. It is a memory system that learns your codebase and remembers it, so you don't have to repeat yourself.
