An Honest Engineering Postmortem: Why We Paused Autobahn Bot for Maintenance
This post is about Autobahn Bot, which is paused for maintenance right now. What it describes is not available until it reopens. Product page
Radical engineering transparency: why we chose to pause our flagship builder platform at app.autobahn.bot, what we learned from the apps people built, and what comes next.
An Honest Engineering Postmortem: Why We Paused Autobahn Bot for Maintenance
In the tech industry, standard public relations playbooks dictate that you never admit technical debt. When a service goes down or undergoes major restructuring, companies post polite status banners: "Undergoing scheduled maintenance to serve you better!"
At Autobahn, we reject corporate euphemisms.
In April 2026, we made the conscious decision to put Autobahn Bot (https://app.autobahn.bot) into official maintenance status: sign-in and new app creation were paused, and the app has shown a maintenance page since.
Here is the unvarnished engineering postmortem of why we paused it, what we learned from operating live vibe-coded applications, and what comes next.
What It Took to Run
Autobahn Bot started with an ambitious thesis: let anyone describe an idea in human language, compile real code into a dedicated container sandbox, and provide an instant live preview with direct-IP routing.
And it worked. Non-developers created functioning calculators, restaurant showcase cards, personal portfolios, and community boards.
But running it taught us where our limits were:
- 1Heavy Machinery for Every Session: Running an isolated Docker container for every session, with a hot, warm and cold lifecycle to keep idle ones cheap, gave us pristine security and zero collisions—and a lot of moving parts for a small team to keep running.
- 2The Split-Brain Attention Dilemma: Operating a container hosting cloud while simultaneously developing External Brain split our small engineering team's focus. The memory work that became External Brain needed our full attention, while the hosting infrastructure demanded 24/7 DevOps babysitting.
The Hard Decision: Patch or Rebuild?
We had two choices: Option A: Keep both running half-staffed, patch as we go, and continue accepting sign-ups. Option B: Pause sign-in and new project creation transparently and focus all core engineering resources on External Brain.
We chose Option B without hesitation.
Shipping bad software fast is a trap. If an engineering foundation isn't built to scale to the next million creators, patching it only compounds technical debt.
What Comes Next
We have not set a date or a final design for the reopening yet; we will announce both here.
We want to thank our community for their patience and trust. When Autobahn Bot reopens, we want it to stand on a sturdier foundation than the one we paused—and we will explain here what changed.
